Kentucky Humane Society

The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS), located in St. Matthews, KY, is a private, nonprofit organization that is Kentucky’s largest pet adoption agency. KHS is also the state’s oldest animal welfare organization, founded in 1884.

Mission:

  • The Kentucky Humane Society is a champion for companion animals. Through leadership, education and proactive solutions, we are creating more compassionate communities.

Vision for the Future

  • KHS envisions a day when every companion animal is given the care, resources and lifelong home they deserve.

 Commitment to Pets

  • The Kentucky Humane Society will never euthanize a pet due to lack of space.
  • We are committed to saving every healthy, behaviorally sound animal we take in.

WCSM Yearly Collection & Donation

Each year, WCSM clubwomen collect cardboard tubes, mainly left from used toilet tissue and paper towels. These cardboard tubes are a high demand supply that cannot be purchased, but only available through compassionate citizens, who will collect and donate these items used in the care of these shelter animals.

The staff members at the Kentucky Humane Society and the Louisville Metro Animal Control shelters use these cardboard tubes to create play and chew toys for both confined dogs and cats in their care who are awaiting new homes.

For dogs, the cardboard tubes are cut to size appropriate for different breeds of dogs. A small mixture of peanut butter and canine nutritional ingredients are inserted inside the tubes and the ends of the tubes are sealed. The filled cardboard tubes are then placed in a freezer. Once frozen the treats are given to the dogs to enjoy and entertain themselves while awaiting that special someone to adopt them. For cats, the cardboard tubes are filled with a bit of catnip, for them to bat around in play.

Woman’s Club Conservation and Public Issues chairmen organized the club members to create handmade dog chew toys and collected items needed from the Humane Society wish list. A group of club members delivered all the items to the Humane Society facility. While there, the club members were given a tour of the facility and introduced to some of the pets awaiting homes.
